Angelia King’s life has been a symphony of music, passion, and unwavering commitment to her craft. Growing up in the small town of Forest City, Arkansas, Angelia was enveloped in a world where music was a constant companion. “My father played the guitar, harmonica, organ, and piano, and my mother played organ and piano too. Even though they were my adopted parents, music was something I naturally picked up,” she shares. The influence of her parents created a foundation that would guide her throughout her life.

Her proximity to Memphis, Tennessee, provided a fertile ground for her early musical endeavors. “Memphis was my first real start in performing openly and getting paid for it,” Angelia recalls. It was there that she first felt the thrill of being on stage, a feeling that would stay with her for years to come.

Angelia’s early exposure to blues and gospel laid the groundwork for her musical identity. However, it wasn't until she moved to the Ozarks that she found herself immersed in the world of jazz. "I didn’t start performing jazz much until I moved to this area," she explains. The Ozarks became a new chapter in her life, introducing her to a community of musicians who would help shape her journey.

One of the more significant influences in her jazz career was Jeff Gouge, who first invited her to sing with local musicians. “When they first asked me, I fell in love. Blues has always been my thing, but jazz is a new flair for me, and I’ve enjoyed it immensely over the past five years,” she says. This connection led her to meet and collaborate with many talented individuals, including Randy Hamm and Carl Hose. “Performing with Randy Hamm at the Gillioz Theatre last year was a highlight. We did a Christmas show with the Mojo Jazz Orchestra, and it was just a fantastic experience,” Angelia recalls fondly.

Her talents are not confined to the stage. As a sous chef, Angelia finds that music is also an integral part of her culinary work. “They actually expect me to play music while I’m working. It just depends on the mood and the meal I’m preparing,” she explains. Whether it’s gospel, blues, or jazz, music is woven into her life.

Angelia’s versatility as a performer extends beyond music. Her theatrical work in Branson’s "Swing Swing Swing," where she played Ella Fitzgerald, was a pivotal moment in her career. “Playing Ella Fitzgerald was an honor. We even recreated her last performance with Louis Armstrong at Carnegie Hall,” she says. Her portrayal of Billie Holiday in "Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill" at the Springfield Contemporary Theatre is another highlight she cherishes.

As she prepares to celebrate her birthday, Angelia reflects on her journey with gratitude and a deep sense of purpose. "People should enjoy the life they have, be grateful to God for it, and don’t sit on your hands," she advises. “Always have something more, always want more in life that is beneficial and fulfilling, something that you can say you gave back in your life.”

Looking ahead, Angelia has exciting performances lined up, including a Gospel extravaganza at the Botanical Gardens’ "Gigs in the Garden" series on October 13th. “Of all the shows I’ve done this year, this will be my biggest one,” she says with anticipation. She also just got done performing with Brueggemann Gouge Jazz Band earlier this month and will be performing again later in the year.

Despite her many accomplishments, Angelia still has dreams she hopes to fulfill. “I’d love to travel out of the country one more time and perform,” she muses, recalling her time touring Europe with her a cappella group Der Sincyst. “Who knows, maybe I’ll stay once I get there.”

In addition to her live performances, Angelia is known for her studio work. She has lent her voice to various projects, including the iconic O’Reilly Auto Parts jingle, which has been a staple for 25 years. “I feel really, really proud of myself for that,” she says. Her contributions to the local music scene, from commercials to theater, have made her a beloved figure in the community.

Angelia King’s story is one of resilience, passion, and an unwavering love for music. As she continues to perform and inspire others, her message remains clear: “Be grateful, keep striving for more, and give back in any way you can.”
